Renewing the licence, state by state
Getting the licence is once. Keeping it is every year or every two years, for as long as you work. What it costs, whether any classes are required, and how long you can leave it lapsed before the licence is gone for good are different in every state. These are the figures checked against the state board's own page or form, each line carrying the date it was checked.
Late costs money. Too late costs the licence. In every state checked here there is a point after which renewal is no longer possible at all and you start over as a new applicant, exam included: five years in California, two years past expiry in Virginia. If your licence has already lapsed, find your state below and read the dates before you pay anything.

These states have no page yet. What cannot be verified does not get written, and each line below says exactly what stopped the check.
- FloridaThe cosmetology section of myfloridalicense.com returned HTTP 403 to every request from this connection on 2026-09-09, both the section index and the nail specialist page. Florida's renewal fee and continuing-education hours are therefore unverified.
- GeorgiaThe state's own site returned HTTP 403 and refused every request from this connection when re-checked on 2026-09-09. Until every figure can be checked against the state's own page, this page is not written.
- MassachusettsThe state's own site returned HTTP 403 and refused every request from this connection when re-checked on 2026-09-09. Until every figure can be checked against the state's own page, this page is not written.
- MichiganThe state's own site returned HTTP 403 and refused every request from this connection when re-checked on 2026-09-09. Until every figure can be checked against the state's own page, this page is not written.
- New JerseyThe New Jersey Board's pages respond but returned an empty body to this reader on 2026-09-09, so there was no text to check anything against. Nothing here is guessed in the Board's place.
- New YorkNew York's Department of State renewal page loaded on 2026-09-09 and does explain renewing through NY Business Express, along with a $10 penalty for renewing more than a year late, but it prints NEITHER the licence term NOR the renewal fee. A page carrying only the penalty would not answer the question a reader arrives with, so it is not written yet.
- OklahomaThe Oklahoma Board's site loaded on 2026-09-09, but its manicuring page covers only the licensing examination and says nothing about renewal, and no renewal page was found on the Board's own domain.
- OregonOregon's pages loaded on 2026-09-09 and do state that a certificate expires the last day of the month two years from issuance, but neither the renewal fee nor any continuing-education hours appear on any reachable page, the renewal page included. The term alone is not enough to write from.
- PennsylvaniaPennsylvania's Board page and its cosmetology licensure guide both loaded on 2026-09-09, but neither prints the renewal cycle, the fee, or any continuing-education requirement for nail technicians. Those figures live in 49 Pa. Code, off the agency's own domain, which this dataset's own rule does not allow as a source.
- WashingtonThe state's own site returned HTTP 403 and refused every request from this connection when re-checked on 2026-09-09. Until every figure can be checked against the state's own page, this page is not written.
