Renewing a nail licence in Massachusetts

What Massachusetts Board of Registration of Cosmetology and Barbering publishes about renewing the licence, checked on September 14, 2026.

How often
A personal manicurist licence renews every two years, and the deadline falls on the licensee's OWN BIRTHDAY rather than on one fixed date shared by everyone, as in most other states. A manicuring SHOP licence works differently: it expires on 31 December of an EVEN year, also every two years. Anyone who holds both a personal licence and a shop licence has two different dates to track.

Is continuing education required
The Board's renewal page and its licensing requirements page do NOT state a continuing education requirement for a manicurist licence: renewal consists of the eLIPSE application and the fee. The continuing education regulation Massachusetts does publish covers electrolysis, not the nail trade. Stated at its true strength: this is 'the Board's pages do not ask for it', not 'the Board declares an exemption'. Checked 2026-09-14.

What a late renewal costs
$57 for each late renewal, charged IN ADDITION to the renewal fee rather than replacing it, and applied when the renewal arrives after the expiry date. This penalty is common to every state Board, not just the nail trade. Others on the same schedule: a duplicate licence is $17, a name change $27, and a returned cheque $23.

Where to renew
Online only, through the Division of Occupational Licensure's eLIPSE platform. The first time, you create a MyMassGov account and link your licence to it; read the licence-linking guide before creating the account. One trap that wastes money: if the SHOP has moved to a new address, do not renew the existing licence, file a new application instead. The Board says so plainly on its renewal page.

Renewal fee
The Board publishes renewal fees by licence type in a separate lookup table, and the manicurist figure has NOT been checked here: that table paginates with JavaScript and the manicurist row sits on a later page, which could not be read during the check on 2026-09-14. What cannot be verified does not get written, so no figure is given. Rows from the same table that were readable, for a sense of scale: cosmetologist $68 and aesthetician $68, both every two years on the licensee's birthday; Aesthetics Salon $82. Follow the source below and type your licence type into the table's search box to find your own row.
