Renewing a nail license in Pennsylvania

What Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology (Department of State) publishes about renewing the license, checked on September 21, 2026.

How often
A Pennsylvania nail technician license expires on January 31 of an EVEN-numbered year: the Board’s page lists Nail Technician under "Licenses that Expire on January 31st of Even-Numbered Years". Counting from today, the cycle now running ends January 31, 2028. The Board sends notices by EMAIL to the most recent address you reported, and the page adds a line worth remembering: the Postal Service does not forward licenses, so a stale address means a lost license. The page does not say that failing to receive a notice excuses a late renewal.

Fee
The two-year renewal fee for a nail technician is $97, printed on the Board’s own fee list next to the line "Nail Technician". The Board’s page says nothing about prorating or refunding that fee, so neither does this page: do not carry another Pennsylvania board’s "non-refundable" line across to this one.

A salon license falls in the other year
A technician license and a salon license do NOT renew in the same year. The Board’s fee list puts "Nail Technology Salon", $144, in the group expiring January 31 of ODD-numbered years, while "Nail Technician", $97, sits in the EVEN-numbered group. Anyone who holds both has two separate dates: the next salon deadline is January 31, 2027, the next technician deadline is January 31, 2028. Cosmetology Salon and Esthetician Salon sit in the same odd-year group, also at $144.

Getting it back after it expires
Pennsylvania has no two-year cliff of the kind some states set. The Board spells out two paths: expired LESS than five years, reactivate at www.pals.pa.gov; expired MORE than five years, the Cosmetology Law requires you to retake the examination before reactivation, with the application going through Pearson VUE, via the OHT Processing Center on 888-511-5352. So the right to get the license back is never lost outright, it just costs an exam.

Where to click to reactivate
The Board walks through it for a license expired less than five years: log in at www.pals.pa.gov, scroll down to your license number, and to the left of it you will see a GREEN pencil icon. Click the pencil, and when the pop up window appears click the word "reactivate" and follow the directions. Payment is by credit or debit card only, with no other route. Once it goes through, the license is posted to you, so allow seven to ten business days. Keep a valid mailing address on file or the license is returned to the Board.

Scam calls threatening your license
The Pennsylvania Department of State keeps a scam alert page for licensees. Scammers pretend to be from a licensing board, contacting licensees by phone and by mail about "the status of their licenses", spoofing caller ID so it shows the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the board’s real phone number, forging Department of State letterhead, threatening license suspension if you fail to act, and falsely claiming involvement with the FBI or DEA. BPOA’s reminders: it will NOT phone you to ask for credit card payment, a wire transfer or a money order; it will NEVER ask for fees, fines or civil penalties to be paid with gift cards; it will NEVER ask for money to be wired or transferred to a foreign country; and it will not threaten you. Do not give personal or financial information over the phone, by text message or by fax, including your zip code. A real investigation or disciplinary action arrives by certified mail or personal service, with a contact name and phone number. If you think you have been targeted, contact your local police department or the Pennsylvania State Police.

Is continuing education required
No. The Board’s own nail technician licensure snapshot says it plainly: no continuing education requirement for licensure. Renewing in Pennsylvania is a matter of paying on time, not of collecting hours.
