Renewing a nail license in Oklahoma

What Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering publishes about renewing the license, checked on September 20, 2026.

How often
From November 1, 2025, Oklahoma practitioner licenses moved from a one-year to a two-year cycle. A license expires on the last day of your birthday month, and the renewal application is due by that date (OAC 175:10-11-1(a) and (d)). Oklahoma’s rule places no duty on the Board to mail a reminder and carries no clause excusing lateness when none arrives. It runs the other way: subsection (e) makes the license void the day after expiry.

Fee
The nail technician renewal fee is $80 for two years, shown on the Board’s own home page under the heading "Two Year License Renewal Effective November 1, 2025" (OAC 175:10-11-2(a)(10)). The rules contain no proration or refund provision; the nearest thing is a one-time low-income waiver (175:10-11-2(d)), which is not proration.

Careful: the Board’s own nail page is out of date
The Board’s own nail-specific page still says a license is valid for one year and that renewal costs $40 a year, with a footer reading last modified November 6, 2024. Just under that fee table sits a small asterisked note: "two (2) year renewal also available" — the two-year option is mentioned, with no price attached. The one-year and $40 figures were superseded by the two-year cycle and the $80 fee on November 1, 2025. Both pages are official pages of the same Board and they currently contradict each other; this page follows the home page and the newer rule book because both postdate the change. If someone quotes you $40, they are most likely reading the stale page.

If you miss the date
The money penalty is $10, and it only applies once a renewal is more than two months late (OAC 175:10-11-2(b); 59 O.S. § 199.10(C)). The trap is that those two months are NOT a grace period: the license went void the day after expiry, and the rule itself calls working on it practicing without the appropriate license. So during the two fee-free months, working is still a violation.

Past five years, review hours and a new exam
Oklahoma’s outer limit is five years, not two. Within five years of the expiry date you can still apply to renew normally, paying the regular fee plus the $10 late fee. Past five years, simple renewal is gone: you must enroll at a cosmetology or barber school for the review hours the statute sets and then retake the examination, and for a manicurist the statutory table sets 100 review hours (59 O.S. § 199.10(C) and (E)).

Is continuing education required
No. The phrase "continuing education" appears nowhere in Chapter 10 of OAC Title 175 or in the Cosmetology and Barber Practice Act, 59 O.S. §§ 199.1-199.18. It appears only in Chapter 20, for massage therapy, a different license under the same Board. The absence is deliberate, not a gap in the search.
