Renewing a nail license in New York
What New York Department of State, Division of Licensing Services publishes about renewing the license, checked on September 20, 2026.
- When you can renew
- The expiry date is printed on your license, and DOS opens the renewal three months before it. If you have no online account you get a paper renewal notice by mail three months before expiry; to be reminded by email you have to add your email address to your record yourself. The DOS nail-specialty pages do not state how many years the license runs for, and the state’s official statute host would not open from our machine on September 20, 2026, so this page states no term: go by the date printed on your license.

- Fee
- The renewal fee is $40, the same as the initial application fee, per the fee list on the DOS nail-specialty page. The page gives no effective date for that figure and says nothing about prorating or refunds.

- If you renew late
- The DOS fee list carries its own line: a $10 late renewal penalty. The renewal link stays open in the system after the expiry date, so being a few months late is still an ordinary renewal plus $10, not a fresh start. But an expired license is not a valid license, so do not read the small penalty as permission to keep working while you sort it out.

- Past five years the license goes inactive
- New York’s outer limit for a nail technician is five years, not two. The DOS FAQ says a license expired for over five years for an operator, which is the category nail specialty sits in, can no longer be renewed and the person must reapply. The two-year figure on that same page belongs to business licenses and barber apprentice licenses, so do not carry it across to a nail specialty license.

- Is continuing education required
- No DOS nail-specialty page states a continuing-education requirement. Worth noting: on the general renewal page DOS spells out the CE requirement for a different profession, real estate appraisers, which shows it does say so when it applies. That absence is a strong signal, but DOS has never written the sentence "no continuing education is required for nail specialty", so this page reports it that way rather than claiming it for them.

- Renewal is online only
- The Department of State says it plainly: all Appearance Enhancement licenses (Business, Area Renter, Cosmetology, Esthetics, Nail Specialty, Natural Hair Styling and Waxing Operator) and Barber licenses must be renewed online through an online account. You are eligible to renew three months prior to the expiration date. The DOS FAQ gives the reason: using online services provides a quicker turnaround time on your renewal. And if your license already reads expired, do not start a new application: DOS states that where the license status is "expired" you should NOT submit a new application, you should renew your existing license. The renewal link stays available until the license goes inactive.

- A name or address change cannot ride along with the renewal
- The DOS FAQ asks: can I update my name and/or address on my renewal? No. You must complete an amendment separately to update your name and/or address. This matters more than it looks, because if you have no online account DOS posts the renewal notice to the address held on file, three months before expiry. An old address means the notice goes to the wrong door.

- Paying is not the same as being renewed
- The DOS FAQ, on how you know the renewal went through: the confirmation screen does NOT mean your license is renewed. Your renewal application is reviewed to make sure it is complete and meets the qualifications for renewal. You will receive an additional email upon issuance of your license. So do not treat the payment receipt as a license, and do not go back to work on the strength of it.

- Child support arrears can suspend the license
- The renewal makes you affirm a child support statement. The DOS FAQ explains why: any person who is four months or more in arrears in child support may be subject to having their business, professional and driver's licenses suspended. This has nothing to do with how well you do the work, but it will stop a renewal, so settle it before the deadline rather than at it.
