Renewing your nail licence before you lose it

Getting the licence is a one-time story with a clear ending. Keeping it is the part nobody tells you about, and it is where the licence is actually lost.

The pattern is the same in every state checked for this guide, and it has three stages. A due date. Then a late period, where the licence can still be renewed but costs more. Then a cliff, past which the licence cannot be renewed at all: it is gone, and going back to work means applying as a brand new person, with the training and the exam again.

The stages have wildly different lengths depending on where you live. That is the whole reason this page exists.

The cliff is the part that matters#

A late fee is an annoyance. The cliff is the thing that ends a career, and it arrives at very different times:

• California: the Board cancels a licence that goes five years without renewal. A cancelled licence cannot be renewed, and getting back to work means sitting the examination again
• Virginia: two years past the expiry date and reinstatement is no longer possible. After that you apply as a new applicant and meet every current entry requirement
• Texas: the published fee ladder runs out at three years expired. Past the top of that ladder, the renewal route is no longer priced

Note what those numbers do. In Virginia a licence left alone for three years is unrecoverable. In California, at three years, it is still just a $75 problem. Same trade, same person, very different outcome, decided by which side of a state line they happened to be on.

If your licence has already lapsed, the first thing to find out is not the fee. It is the date.

What renewal costs, and how often#

As checked on 9 September 2026:

• California: $50, every two years. A late renewal adds a $25 delinquent fee, for $75
• Texas: $50 on time, every two years. $75 if expired less than 18 months, $100 if expired 18 months to 3 years
• Virginia: $105, every two years, up from $90 before 1 September 2024. More than 30 days late turns it into a reinstatement at $210
• North Carolina: $20, every year, expiring 1 October

North Carolina is the odd one and worth understanding, because its arithmetic is not like the others. There is no flat late penalty. Instead the fee table is keyed to the year your licence expired and stacks the lapsed years: $20 if it expires this coming October, $40 if it expired in 2025, $60 for 2024, $80 for 2023, $100 for 2022. Roughly $20 for every year you were away, and you still owe it when you come back.

That is gentler than a cliff and harsher than a one-off fine. It means a North Carolina licence quietly accrues a debt while it sits unused.

Do you have to take classes?#

This is where guessing does the most damage, because the honest answer is that states genuinely disagree.

• California: no. The Board's own FAQ answers it in as many words, that it does not require continuing education credits to maintain a licence
• Virginia: the Board's regulations set no continuing-education requirement for nail technicians anywhere in the chapter
• North Carolina: yes. Signing the renewal form certifies that you obtained all the hours state law and Board rules require, and the Board can audit that. The form itself does not print the number of hours
• Texas: unresolved, and said so deliberately. TDLR publishes a four-hour requirement every two years, including one hour of sanitation and one hour of human trafficking awareness, with two hours instead of four for anyone licensed 15 years or more. But that page is written for barbers and cosmetologists and does not state whether a specialty licence such as manicurist is covered

The Texas gap is not an oversight in this guide. The rule may well cover manicurists; the board's page simply does not say so, and this site does not print a number it cannot source. Call TDLR on (512) 463-6599 and ask.

Where hours are required, treat the certification seriously. In North Carolina a false one is grounds for discipline against your licence, which is a worse outcome than the renewal you were trying to save money on.

Do not rely on the reminder letter#

Boards generally do mail a renewal notice. It is not a safety net.

Virginia's regulation states it plainly: the department will mail a renewal notice, and failure to receive it does not relieve the licensee of the obligation to renew. Virginia also counts the date it receives your money, not the date you sent it, which quietly makes mailing at the deadline a bad idea.

The practical version, for anyone who has moved house, changed name after marriage, or changed the address on file: the board writes to the address it has. If it is not the address you live at, the first news of the problem may be a customer asking to see your licence.

What to do this week#

1. Find your expiry date. It is on the licence itself, and boards publish an online lookup
2. Find your state on the state pages and read the fee and the cliff
3. If you have moved, update your address with the board before anything else
4. If your licence has already lapsed, work out which side of the cliff you are on before paying anything. Past it, a renewal payment is not what you need

What this guide does not cover#

Only four states are verified here so far: California, Texas, Virginia and North Carolina. Ten others were checked on 9 September 2026 and could not be verified, most of them because the state's own site refused the request outright. Those are listed with the reason on the state page, and no figures are written for them.

If your state is not among the four, do not read another state's numbers as if they were yours. The whole point of this page is that they are not.
