- Open first, inspected after
- North Carolina runs the opposite way to many states: file the application before opening, have construction finished and all equipment installed on the opening date, and an unannounced physical inspection follows within 30 to 45 days after opening. The licence arrives about 2 to 3 weeks after the inspection. A salon not ready within 30 days of its stated opening date must file a new application and pay again.

- What the premises must have
- From the Board's self-inspection checklist: the salon must be separated from any other business by a solid wall at least seven feet high with its own outside entrance, and separated from living, dining and sleeping areas. Manicuring tables need at least 48 inches centre to centre. A sink with hot and cold water separate from the restroom, and continuous ventilation where clients are served. Products containing MMA are prohibited. Mobile salons are prohibited.

- Renewal
- Renewed every year, expiring 1 February. Postmarked 1 December to 1 February: $3 per active chair plus a $10 processing fee. 2 February to the end of February adds a $10 late fee. From 1 March a further $25 reinstatement fee. The renewal must list every licensee practising in the shop and identify each as an employee or a booth renter.
