Driver's license in Oregon
What Oregon Driver & Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) publishes about getting a license, checked August 27, 2026.
- SSN required only if you have one
- Applicants for a standard licence, permit or ID card must give a verifiable Social Security number IF one has been assigned to them. If you have never been assigned one, you do not need one. REAL ID and commercial licences do require one, and anyone ineligible for an SSN must provide proof of that ineligibility.

- Which licences need proof of lawful status
- Oregon lists proof of lawful status as a requirement for commercial licences (CDL, CLP) and for REAL ID. A standard, non-REAL ID licence is not on that list.

- Foreign documents Oregon accepts
- For a non-REAL ID, Oregon accepts a foreign passport in English or with an English translation, expired no more than five years; the ITIN issuance letter from the IRS; and a Certificate of Identity issued by a foreign consulate. Documents must be originals or certified copies, and photocopies are not accepted.

- Oregon DMV states that the documents it accepts as proof of identity and residency may change without prior notice, and that it may ask for additional proof or refuse any document. Check before the day you go rather than relying on a list printed last month.

- Switching to REAL ID means going in person
- Since 7 May 2025, anyone 18 or older boarding a domestic flight needs a REAL ID or an accepted alternative such as a passport. Switching a standard licence to a REAL ID means making an appointment or visiting a DMV office for standby service, not doing it online.
