- Documents to bring
- One document proving identity and date of birth, a Social Security card or one document proving you have a Social Security number, one document proving a North Carolina address (two for a REAL ID), and if you were not born in the US, one document proving lawful status.

- The insurance proof must be on paper
- You must bring PRINTED proof of liability insurance from a provider licensed in North Carolina. An image on your phone will not be accepted. A learner permit does not require it.

- Four tests, not two
- A first North Carolina licence means passing four things: the written knowledge test, road sign recognition, a vision test, and the driving test. Sign recognition is its own test here, where many states fold it into the written one.

- You queue by phone, not by appointment
- Every office takes walk-ins from opening until that day's capacity is full. You check in with your phone, then wait in your car or a nearby business watching your place in line, and a text tells you when to come in.

- Your old state licence gets cancelled
- Applying for a North Carolina licence cancels any licence you hold in another state, through the State-to-State Verification programme. The card arrives by post within 20 business days, and you drive on a Temporary Driving Certificate until then.

- Doing it online costs extra
- The PayIt online service charges $3 per transaction plus a 1.85 percent card processing fee. NCDMV states that the state neither collects nor benefits from it.
